Maritime Law

Shipping plays a major role in the economy of Aruba, Curaçao, St Maarten, Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba. Having strategic geographical positions and well developed ports, the islands services key transportation routs. Furthermore, the oil refineries in Aruba and Curaçao, and the oil transshipment terminals in Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire and St Eustatius bring a lot of vessel movements. Additionally, Aruba and St Maarten’s capitals, Oranjestad and Philipsburg respectively, are very popular port of calls for cruise ships. The islands are also well-liked destinations for private yachts.

AMDC Law provides the following maritime law services:

  • Ship registration in the ship register in Curaçao;
  • Purchase, sale and transfer of vessels;
  • Ship mortgages in cooperation with a civil law notary;
  • Assisting international mortgagees in the enforcement of ship mortgages, by placing an embargo on the ship and assisting with the court auction of the ship;
  • Litigation regarding vessel collisions, including yacht and recreational boating collisions; and
  • Cargo disputes.
